The Red Onion, Aspen

The Red Onion

Welcome to the Oldest Bar in Aspen: The Red Onion

This used to be the scene of the wet T-shirt contests in the legendary wild-and-crazy Aspen of the Seventies. Those contests are history; but still the Red Onion remains one of those get down ski town kind of places with a long well-worn bar populated by a mix of worker bees and nostalgic tourists

History:

Aspen’s oldest historic restaurant and bar, The Red onion was born at the height of the silver boom in 1892 when Tom Latta built the two-story structure on Cooper Avenue. The saloon’s business came from men interested in sports of the day. Prize fighting, wrestling and cycling. Local legend has it that the upstairs operated as a brothel. At the time it was a standalone building and one of the three places in Aspen to get a meal.
